Fermin leads Cal Poly past UC Riverside 66-54

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Amaurys Fermin scored 16 points and Cal Poly outscored UC Riverside 22-5 to start the second half en route to a 66-54 victory Thursday night in the opening round of the Big West tournament.

The fourth-seeded Mustangs (18-14) advance to the semifinals Friday against No. 3 seed UC Santa Barbara. Cal Poly was swept by the Gauchos during the regular season.

David Hanson added 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Mustangs, and Chris Eversley had 11 points.

UC Riverside (14-17) got 15 points from Phil Martin and 10 from Robert Smith.

Cal Poly trailed 34-28 at halftime, but tied it at 35-all after a 3-pointer by Dylan Royer and a three-point play by Fermin. The Mustangs went ahead 50-39 on a 3-pointer by Eversley with 9:28 remaining.

Riverside missed its first five shots after the break and was just 1 for 9 from the floor during the Mustangs’ second-half spurt.
