GOLD BEACH, Ore. (AP) — Authorities have identified two boaters missing after their vessel capsized near Gold Beach last week.

The Curry County sheriff’s office said Monday that 38-year-old Michael Shane Machado and 22-year-old Joshua Weibel, both of Port Orford, have been missing since their boat was overturned Friday evening.

Witnesses told rescuers that they saw one man in the water near the rocks of the Rogue River’s north jetty and a person possibly trapped beneath the capsized boat. Authorities say a rescuer reached the boat and rapped on the hull repeatedly but heard no response, and nobody was in the vessel when rescuers reached it on the shore hours later.

Meanwhile, the Coast Guard says a boat that went aground near Newport is believed to have sunk after four people were rescued.
