PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (AP) — James Shields took another step toward his opening day assignment for the Tampa Bay Rays, pitching four scoreless innings during a 2-1, 10-inning loss to the Minnesota Twins on Monday.

Shields allowed three hits, walked two and struck out two in his second spring training start, building on the two perfect innings he worked against the New York Yankees last week.

Rays closer Kyle Farnsworth yielded two hits and had a throwing error that allowed an unearned run to score in his spring debut.

Carl Pavano allowed one run and four hits in four innings for the Twins, who got a one-out, 10th-inning homer from Luke Hughes to win it.

Tyler Robertson worked one scoreless inning to get the victory.
