Coroner in Vegas rules Red Rock hiker died in fall

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- The Clark County coroner says a 46-year-old hiker whose body was found at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area died in a fall of several hundred feet.

A county spokesman said Wednesday that Coroner Michael Murphy ruled Ronald Kirk's death was an accident.

Kirk's body was found Saturday in rugged terrain at the popular hiking area about 20 miles west of the Las Vegas Strip.

He was reported missing Jan. 22, several days after family members received a text message saying he was going hiking.

Family members plan a 4 p.m. Friday memorial near where Kirk's vehicle was found Jan. 23 and searchers launched efforts to find him.

A brother, Garnett Kirk, says the event will be at the Red Springs picnic area in Calico Basin off State Route 159.
