ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) — The Oakland Raiders opened the free agency period by releasing one of the more prominent free agents they signed just a year ago.

The Raiders announced Tuesday they have released Kevin Boss just one year into a $16 million, four-year contract.

Boss was brought into to replace Pro Bowler Zach Miller but was not utilized much in coach Hue Jackson’s offense. He finished the season with 28 catches for 368 yards and three touchdowns in 14 games. Boss had a base salary of $2 million for 2012 with a roster bonus of $2 million due this week.

The Raiders were otherwise mostly quiet at the start of free agency. Their focus recently had been on getting under the salary cap by restructuring contracts and cutting players.
