An overnight fire charred an abandoned duplex near Northeast Fourth Plain Boulevard in the Ogden neighborhood, officials said.

The fire was reported just before 3 a.m. Thursday at 3303 N.E. 78th Ave., off a gravel road near the Vancouver Plaza shopping center.

The first engine arrived within five minutes and found an abandoned, boarded-up duplex that was fully involved, said Kevin Stromberg, a fire department spokesman.

No one was reported injured or in the duplex at the time. Neighbors told firefighters no one had been living there for some time.

Firefighters set up a defensive attack, spraying water from outside the home. Once the blaze was nearly extinguished, crews went inside the structure to continue fighting the fire, Stromberg said.

Eighteen Vancouver firefighters from four engines and one truck fought the fire.

The fire caused $100,000 in damage, according to early estimates.
