Letter: Plenty of reasons to oppose pipeline

The Columbian
Published: March 15, 2012, 5:00pm

Newt Gingrich has accused President Barack Obama of killing jobs and political motives in blocking the 2,000 miles of the Keystone XL pipeline. This pipeline would be able to carry a half million barrels a day of the dirtiest oil — volatile raw bitumen — from Canada’s oil sands to Texas refineries, threatening to destroy wildlife, and passing over the Ogallala Aquifer, which supplies drinking water to millions of Americans.

Another pipeline has leaked 12 times in six states in the first year of operation. The ExxonMobil pipeline spilled 40,000 gallons of crude oil into the wild Yellowstone River in July of 2011.

Scientists, even several Nobel Peace Prize winners, oppose this pipeline.
