CHELTENHAM, England (AP) — Kauto Star’s attempt to win a third Cheltenham Gold Cup ended with an early exit from Friday’s showpiece race. The winner was Synchronised, an 8-1 shot ridden by champion jockey Tony McCoy.

Kauto Star had been declared fit for what was likely to be his final festival appearance despite a fall during training. But jockey Ruby Walsh pulled up the 12-year-old steeplechaser early after a flat start.

McCoy took Synchronised up the hill to outlast 7-4 favorite Long Run, which finished third. The Giant Bolster, a 50-1 outsider, was second.
