KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs signed veteran tackle Eric Winston on Saturday to shore up an aging and ineffective offensive line.

Terms of the contract were not announced. The team planned a conference call for Monday to discuss the deal.

Winston was released by the Houston Texas on Monday in a surprising move that saved the team about $4.5 million against the salary cap. He had started every game he played in over the past five seasons at right tackle.

Winston will also play on the right side for the Chiefs. He takes over for Barry Richardson, who became a free agent after struggling much of last season.

Chiefs General Manager Scott Pioli called upgrading the offensive line a priority this offseason.
