Peavy leads White Sox past Mariners 5-0

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Jake Peavy threw five hitless innings in his best outing of the spring and the Chicago White Sox beat the Seattle Mariners 5-0 on Saturday.

Peavy struck out five and walked one. The right-hander had allowed nine runs in 4 1-3 innings in his previous two starts.

Eduardo Escobar, a candidate for a reserve role, hit a three-run homer off Hong-Chih Kuo to give the White Sox a 4-0 lead in the fifth inning.

Kuo allowed four runs in an inning.

Brent Lillibridge and Gordon Beckham each had a double for the White Sox.

Mariners pitcher Blake Beavan, a candidate for fifth starter, allowed a run and three hits in four innings.

Seattle finished with two hits.
