SALEM, Ore. (AP) -- The Oregon State Police is reporting 22 DUI arrests statewide over St. Patrick's Day and overnight.
Troopers also are investigating two fatal traffic crashes that left three people dead. Troopers do not know yet if alcohol was a contributing factor in those crashes.
Last year, when St. Patrick's Day was on a Thursday, OSP troopers reported 16 DUII arrests in the same 16-hour period.
According to statistics compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than a third of the fatal accidents during St. Patrick's Day 2009 involved at least one driver or motorcyclist who had been drinking.
