PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A Republican running for Oregon labor commissioner is suing the Democratic secretary of state over the date of the election.

Secretary of State Kate Brown’s office says an obscure 2009 law requires elections workers to put the race for labor commissioner on the ballot in November this year rather than in May, when it typically appears.

Republican Bruce Starr filed the claim in Marion County on Tuesday. He argues that Brown’s office is misinterpreting the 2009 law.
