Mudslide blocks Amtrak train in S. Oregon

CHEMULT, Ore. (AP) — An Amtrak train has hit a tree lying across the tracks in southern Oregon’s Cascade Mountains, triggering a mudslide that ran underneath the baggage car and blocked the train.

Amtrak spokeswoman Christine Leeds said none of the 246 passengers or crew was hurt when the train hit the tree Wednesday afternoon, but a spare engine had to be sent to take the passenger cars back to the station in Chemult, a small community about 165 miles southeast of Portland.

There the passengers were to board buses to continue their journeys north.

The train was the No. 14 Coast Starlight from Los Angeles to Seattle.

There was no immediate explanation for why the tree was blocking the tracks.
