AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) — Chinese team Sanya may head back to New Zealand after a rudder on the boat snapped while leading the fifth leg of the Volvo Ocean race.

It’s the latest setback for Sanya, which was forced out of the first leg because of bow damage and out of the second leg with a problem with the rigging.

Skipper Mike Sanderson says “there was a big bang, a really big one.”

It’s not clear if the rudder damage was caused by a wave or something the boat hit in the water.

Sanderson says “all I know is it’s broken and we’ve got a nasty hole in the boat.”

The team is assessing the damage before deciding whether to head to Wellington for repairs. The alternative is to complete the remaining 5,500 miles to Itajai, Brazil, on the emergency rudder.
