Crews completed a temporary fix overnight Thursday to a faulty counterweight on the southbound side of the Interstate 5 Bridge.

Crews made repairs during a series of lifts starting at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, said Don Hamilton, Oregon Department of Transportation spokesman.

Repairs caused some long delays for southbound traffic, Hamilton said. One lift lasted for more than an hour; most were between 20 and 30 minutes, he said.

The span was back down by 5 a.m. Thursday.

The fix repaired a counterweight on the southbound span that was partially loose from its track. Assessing the problem caused two daytime lifts Wednesday, backing up traffic into Vancouver.

Crews will install new rollers and pins as part of a permanent fix next week, Hamilton said.
