A Vancouver man injured when his parked car was hit by another car on Interstate 5 early Thursday remained in critical condition at a local hospital, officials said.

Samuel R. Brackeen, 27, was parked on the right shoulder of I-5 between the City Center and East Mill Plain Boulevard exits when his car was hit from behind by a 2006 Subaru Forester driven by Preston D. Garrison, 41, also of Vancouver.

Brackeen was taken to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center with a head injury, internal injuries and fractured ribs, according to the Washington State Patrol. A PeaceHealth spokeswoman said he was listed in critical condition Friday afternoon.

Garrison, the driver of the other car, was sent to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center with cuts on his forehead and rib injuries. He was treated and arrested a few hours later on suspicion of vehicular assault.

Alcohol was a “big factor” in this crash, said Trooper Ryan Tanner, a state patrol spokesman.

The investigation is ongoing.
