HOUSTON (AP) — Two best friends on a fishing trip in the Gulf of Mexico were plunged into a life-and-death struggle when their 30-foot boat sank. After more than 30 hours in the cold waters off the Texas coast, only one man survived.

Ken Henderson told The Associated Press of the final hours spent with his best friend and fellow ex-Marine, Ed Coen.

After their boat sank, the men tried to swim to oil and gas rigs in the area. After surviving the night, though, Coen’s condition worsened and Henderson made the fateful decision to cut a cord that bound the men together so he could make a final try for one of the rigs. He barely made it, but by the time the Coast Guard arrived, it was too late for Coen.
