MONMOUTH, Ore. (AP) — A Monmouth, Ore., area man accused of accidentally wounding his 8-year-old stepson while showing off a handgun has been arrested.

Polk County sheriff’s Lt. Jeff Isham says the boy had surgery at Salem Hospital for a gunshot wound to the left shoulder.

The Oregon Department of Human Services is also investigating.

Isham says once deputies sorted out conflicting information about Monday’s shooting, they arrested Steven Hanna for investigation of felony assault, reckless endangering, tampering with evidence, tampering with a witness and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

A hospital nurse contacted the sheriff’s office after the boy’s mother brought him for treatment.

Isham says the boy’s mother was arrested for investigation of witness tampering and a male friend of Hanna’s was arrested for investigation of interfering with a peace officer. Both were cited and released.
