COOS BAY, Ore. (AP) -- The Port of Coos Bay hopes to bring the West Coast's first tests of offshore wind energy to the waters off Oregon.
The World newspaper (http://bit.ly/Hbiq8f ) reports that the port has signed a six-month exclusive negotiating agreement with an unnamed company. That company is trying to win a federal Department of Energy grant to test offshore wind turbines. If it wins, the company could start testing offshore turbines as early as 2014.
The Department of Energy is expected to award grants this September for testing offshore wind on the East, West and Gulf coasts.
