Bagley Downs — Weather conditions were not great — a morning snow, chilly winds and intermittent rain — but AmeriCorps women kept digging hundreds of weeds. Melissa Princehouse, Julie Pachico and Lindsey Thompson, AmeriCorps staff for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Washington, and Jessica Latus, AmeriCorps member with Vancouver Watersheds Alliance, prepared a planting bed for the fifth-grade Young Women in Action program at Roosevelt Elementary School. The volunteers worked in the planting bed at the Jim Parsley Community Center as a service project for AmeriCorps Service Week, March 10-18.

Later this spring, the students will plant herbs donated by the horticulture programs at Lewis and Clark and Fort Vancouver high schools.

Young Women in Action is a mentoring program of the Foundation for Vancouver Public Schools.
