FETHARD, Ireland (AP) — Montjeu, a champion racehorse in Europe and renowned sire, has died at 16 in Ireland.

The thoroughbred farm Coolmore Stud said Thursday the stallion died of septicemia, a blood disorder caused by infection.

Montjeu won the French and Irish derbies in 1999 plus the Prix de L’arc de Triomphe. In 2000, he won the prestigious King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot.

Monjeu sired three Epsom Derby winners, including Pour Moi in a prolific 2011 in which 15 horses with his bloodlines won group or graded races.
