A 68-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed Friday night as he walked in a roadway in the Sunnyside neighborhood, north of Orchards.

According to a Clark County Sheriff’s Office news release, a 1991 Ford Econoline van driven by Sid Sutherland of Brush Prairie struck the man around 9:35 p.m. The accident occurred near the 9000 block of Northeast 76th Street, west of Five Corners. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene after first responders attempted to provide him with medical aid.

Deputies did not release the pedestrian’s name because his family, some of whom live out of state, had not all been notified. The man lived in the Orchards area.

A witness who had been driving behind Sutherland told Clark County sheriff’s investigators that the victim had been walking in the travel lanes of the roadway moments before he was struck, said Sgt. Alex Schoening with the Clark County Sheriff’s Office. The area where the accident happened is not illuminated by streetlights.

Investigators do not believe Sutherland was impaired at the time of the incident. He did not receive a citation.

The investigation remains ongoing.
