Last week’s prescription drug take-back event collected more than 800 pounds of pills — a local record.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with Clark County Environmental Services and the PREVENT! Coalition, participated in the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Fourth National Prescription Drug Take Back Event on Saturday.

During the four-hour event at Clark College, 341 visitors dropped off 836 pounds of pills. In addition, the event collected 14 pounds of cardboard, 34 pounds of glass, 78 pounds of mixed paper and 163 pounds of plastic pill bottles.

The two events in 2011 collected 336 pounds and 234 pounds of pills.

Ridgefield, La Center, Battle Ground, Camas and Washougal police departments accept unwanted medications during regular business hours at their facilities. The Clark County Sheriff’s Office has the oldest medicine return program in the state, and also accepts medications during regular business hours at both precincts and at headquarters in downtown Vancouver.
