UCI tops Penn State 3-1 in NCAA volleyball semis

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Kevin Tillie had 21 kills and eight digs to lead UC Irvine over Penn State 3-1 on Thursday night in the opening semifinal of the NCAA volleyball championship.

The top-seeded Anteaters (25-5) will play the winner between second-seeded USC and No. 3 seed Lewis for the title.

Irvine lost the first set 18-25 before winning the next three by scores of 25-18, 25-15 and 25-19. The Anteaters trailed in the final set before Tillie's spike put the Anteaters in front 19-18. Tillie closed the match with a kill.

Joe Sunder had 15 kills and eight digs for the fourth-seeded Nittany Lions (23-6), the 2008 champions who were playing in their 14th straight Final Four.

The Anteaters lost to Penn State in the 2006 semis before beating PSU the next year for their first national title. Irvine also won in 2009.
