Letter: Aggressive about tackling poverty

The Columbian
Published: May 3, 2012, 5:00pm

Together with 150 volunteers from 38-plus states, four of us Longview natives had the incredible opportunity to represent Washington’s 3rd Congressional District recently on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C., and use our voices for the world’s poorest people. We make up some of the most dedicated advocates for the ONE Campaign, a grass-roots movement committed to the fight against extreme poverty and preventable disease around the world.

We heard from high-profile speakers, activists, and political leaders, and collaborated on working to become more effective advocates for the more than 1.4 billion people living on less than $1.25/day.

We learned that for less than 1 percent of the U.S. budget, bipartisan programs like the Global Fund and PEPFAR have provided a lifeline to millions and strengthened America’s security and friendships abroad.

We were especially pleased to meet with Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler, Sen. Maria Cantwell, and Sen. Patty Murray’s staff, and to have the opportunity to discuss these lifesaving programs with them. These development programs deliver results and make enormous impact in the lives of the world’s poorest. As a ONE member and Washingtonian, I’m proud we are staying true to America’s legacy of helping people help themselves.
