Eagle Point teachers union on strike

EAGLE POINT, Ore. (AP) -- Eagle Point school employees are on strike, and negotiations with the school district are continuing.

The acting president of the Eagle Point Education Association, Dave Carrell, said the strike began at 6 a.m. Tuesday. He also said negotiators had been working all night and were still talking past the deadline. He says, "Something still could happen and we certainly hope it does."

Jackson County School District 9 already canceled classes Monday and Tuesday in anticipation of the strike.

The school board has said it plans to continue classes Wednesday and keep graduation plans on track for seniors. The board gave Superintendent Cynda Rickert permission to hire substitutes and to offer incentive pay to employees who choose not to strike.

The district near Medford has 328 employees, including 186 teachers.
