GOLD BAR, Wash. (AP) — School district officials in Gold Bar, Wash., say an alert bus driver helped school officials confiscate an inert hand grenade that an elementary school boy had planned to show his friends.

Superintendent Dan Chaplik tells The Daily Herald of Everett that http://is.gd/m3nF4C that the bus driver learned about the grenade Monday morning and called Gold Bar Elementary Principal Shawn Ryan.

The principal called the Snohomish County sheriff’s office and met the bus before it reached school grounds. Chaplik says the principal took the grenade to a nearby field.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Shari Ireton says the grenade did not contain explosives. It was turned over to the Washington State Patrol explosives unit for disposal.

Chaplik says school officials are investigating but don’t believe the boy had any violent intentions. His age was not immediately available.

Gold Bar is southeast of Everett.
