Old West deputy’s death in line of duty remembered

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Three members of law enforcement killed in the line of duty were memorialized Tuesday in Salem.

Among them was Lake County sheriff’s deputy Samuel Lewis, killed in 1882 after attempting to guard a prisoner from a lynch mob.

The 2011 deaths of Eugene police officer Chris Kilcullen and Department of Corrections officer Buddy Ray Herron were also marked by their additions to a wall dedicated to fallen officers. They join 172 others.

Lewis’ death was brought to light by a retired Texas deputy sheriff, who researches the deaths of officers killed in the line of duty.
