Khan promoter says Peterson rematch is off

NEW YORK (AP) — Golden Boy Promotions says Amir Khan’s rematch against Lamont Peterson has been canceled because of Peterson’s failed drug test.

The promoter announced on Wednesday on its website that Khan’s bout against the WBA and IBF junior welterweight champion scheduled for May 19 in Las Vegas has been called off.

The Nevada Athletic Commission had said the fight was in doubt because a urine test in March found unacceptably high levels of synthetic testosterone in Peterson’s system.

Peterson’s lawyer said the failed test stemmed from an “inadvertent” failure to disclose treatment for low testosterone levels.

Peterson defeated Khan in a disputed split decision in December to win the WBA and IBF belts.

Neither Peterson’s attorney nor Nevada boxing regulators were immediately available Thursday to comment.
