Mount Vernon council passes panhandling ban
Wednesday, May 9, 2012
MOUNT VERNON, Wash. (AP) -- The Mount Vernon City Council has approved a ban against panhandlers on streets.
The ordinance approved Wednesday bans interactions between pedestrians and vehicles.
The Skagit Valley Herald reports (http://is.gd/wxS5Dr ) the proposal hit a snag last month when firefighters asked for an exemption for their annual "Fill the Boot" fundraiser.
Violators of the new panhandling ban could face a $500 fine or 30 days in jail.
