SEATTLE (AP) — A man accused of falsifying overtime before he retired from the Washington State Patrol has been charged in Seattle with official misconduct.

King County prosecutors say William Gardiner claimed overtime he did not work and miscoded overtime so it would count toward boosting his retirement benefit.

The 51-year-old lieutenant retired in October.

The Seattle Times reports (http://is.gd/m4Ahgu ) Gardiner could not be reached Wednesday for comment. A lawyer for the Washington State Patrol Lieutenants’ Association previously criticized the investigation.

State records show Gardiner was paid about $163,000 in 2010 — more than any other patrol employee, including the chief who earned $140,000.
