PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Drexel was among the teams that dominated at the 74th Dad Vail Regatta Friday on Philadelphia’s Schuylkill River.

The Dragons advanced seven of 10 boats to Saturday’s semifinals. The women’s second varsity eight earned a berth in the finals.

Drexel’s men’s varsity eight boat won in 7:00.106. Georgia Tech came in second place with a time of 6:09.454 followed by Lehigh, Albany and Ohio University. The men’s eight will compete Saturday against La Salle, Michigan State, Grand Valley and Temple in the semifinals. The top two finishers will advance to the finals for a shot at the coveted Richard O’Brien Trophy.

Rowers competed Friday on windy, choppy conditions on the Schuylkill.

More than 3,500 student athletes from 118 colleges and universities are competing this weekend on the 2,000-meter course.
