Letter: A retirement system lesson

The Columbian
Published: May 10, 2012, 5:00pm

I’m writing to Ronald R. Jensen, (May 4 letter, “Easy way to save Social Security”) and others not familiar with the Federal Employees Retirement System, which came into effect in 1987. It established Social Security as part of the retirement system for every federal employee hired after that date.

The president and most of Congress are already covered under Social Security. Congress was brought under Social Security in 1984.
