Aston Villa fires manager Alex McLeish

BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) -- Aston Villa has fired manager Alex McLeish after just one season in charge of the Premier League club.
Villa, owned by American Randy Lerner, went 7-14-17 for 38 points, two above the relegation zone and the club's fewest points since the switch to three points for a win in 1981-82.
Lerner says "compelling play and results that instill a sense of confidence that Villa is on the right track have been plainly absent."
McLeish was hired last offseason after managing crosstown rival Birmingham, which was relegated.
