EAGLE POINT, Ore. (AP) — With employees striking, the Eagle Point school district is resuming classes Monday with substitute teachers crossing picket lines.

The district said about 2,250 students were assigned to attend classes in the morning and 1,369 attended. It said buses ran into problems: one breakdown, a late arrival and a street’s worth of students missed. The school district said 55 union members returned to work.

The strike began last Tuesday, and classes were canceled last week. Bargaining is to resume Tuesday. Class sizes and health insurance are at issue.

The district near Medford has 328 employees, including 186 teachers and a total of about 4,100 students.

The district says it will focus on core academics and provide meals, transportation and special education during the strike. Athletics and graduation remain on schedule.
