WHIDBEY ISLAND, Wash. (AP) — The Coast Guard says crews are monitoring a fire on a 128-foot fishing vessel anchored in Penn Cove off of Whidbey Island.

The blaze broke out late Saturday aboard the Deep Sea vessel, and continued to burn early Sunday.

Fire crews attempted to put the fire out but stopped when it appeared that water from firefighting efforts had caused the boat to list. Officials say they were worried that more water would cause the boat to sink.

Coast Guard says Sunday morning it was working to create a 500-yard safety zone around the boat.

Officials are trying to locate the vessel owner.
