Yakima medical college celebrates first class

YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) -- With its first graduating class, a new medical college in Yakima, Wash., is realizing a dream.

Pacific Northwest University of Health Science on Saturday graduated its first class of osteopathic doctors since opening in 2008.

The Yakima Herald-Republic (http://bit.ly/JGXPHo ) says the inaugural Class of 2012 started with 75 students and 69 have now graduated. All the graduates have been matched to residency training programs around the country, including in Washington, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Alaska.

The university's goal is to bring more primary care doctors to rural communities in the Pacific Northwest, particularly to historically underserved areas like the Yakima Valley.
