EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — An Army recruiter has pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor charge accusing him of having sex with a 17-year-old girl in a Springfield, Ore., recruiting office.

The Register-Guard reports (http://is.gd/F7qpDx) that 33-year-old Staff Sgt. Russell Edward Miller of Eugene appeared briefly Tuesday in Circuit Court. His lawyer, Bob Schrank, entered the plea on his behalf to a single count of contributing to the sexual delinquency of a minor.

Miller’s next court date is June 20.

According to Springfield police reports, Miller told police that he had sex with the girl. Police say she told officers she went to the recruiting office April 11 seeking a prom date.

The reports say Miller told officers he knew she was 17. The age of consent in Oregon is 18.

The Iraq War veteran told police he’d been removed from the recruiting job.

The Army is conducting its own investigation.
