INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — American rookie Josef Newgarden is staying on top of Indianapolis’ speed charts.

The Tennessee native became the fastest driver this month, turning a fast lap of 222.486 mph in the final 30 minutes of Monday’s practice session. It’s the second time in two days that Newgarden has had the fastest lap of the day. Colombia’s Sebastian Saavedra had the best lap Sunday at 221.526.

Two other Americans were right behind Newgarden on Monday.

Andretti Autosport teammates Ryan Hunter-Reay and Marco Andretti were second and third. Hunter-Reay had a 221.639, while Andretti turned a fast lap of 221.519.

Even ex-Formula One driver Jean Alesi was fast enough to pass his rookie test after going 211.516. It was the best time of any Lotus engine this month.
