PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Two Oregon legislators will not be returning to Salem after losing to challengers from their own parties.

Republican Sen. Chris Telfer of Bend lost Tuesday to former House Majority Leader Tim Knopp, who had decried a lack of leadership in the state Senate. Democratic Rep. Mike Schaufler lost to high school teacher Jeff Reardon after an allegation Schaufler groped a woman’s breast and crossed Democratic leaders in the last session.

Republican Rep. Bob Jenson of Pendleton was leading challenger Brent Smith 52 percent to 31 percent.

Leaders from both parties are hoping for strong candidates to emerge from the primaries who can help them grab control of the Legislature in November’s general election.
