Letter: Sports officials are biased
Wednesday, May 16, 2012
I am a student athlete concerned with a problem that is increasing more and more as sports are progressing in our nation: referees. Referees have grown biased in their calls and not just for any particular team. They are bad for both teams on any sport I have seen.
As an active participant in sports since I was 5 years old, I have yet to see or participate in a sporting event where both teams were happy with the referees. In middle school, I have witnessed more injuries than ever this year and the sports seasons aren’t over yet.
Half of my basketball team members were wearing some sort of brace around their knees or ankles, including myself. And none of us started the season that way.
When referees make biased calls, perhaps because their child or relative is on one of the teams, the game turns into a free-for-all and that is dangerous for all players. Without stricter rules and fair calls, players go wild. With no limits, they just move to rougher play, injuring many.
My solution is to use out-of-town referees. There will be fewer biased calls, fewer injuries, and happier players and parents.
It’s a win-win situation for everyone.
