Sketchers settles with WA over false advertising

SEATTLE (AP) — Washington state residents who bought a Sketchers shoe that promised toned buttocks will be able to get a refund.

Attorney General Rob McKenna’s office says the shoe company will allocate $40 million for refunds and pay $5 million to the 44 states that sued the shoemaker for false advertising.

The attorneys general say the commercials for the Sketchers line of Shape-Ups, Tone-Ups, or the Skechers Resistance Runner promised toned buttocks, weight loss and muscle strengthening just by walking around.

Instead of fighting the lawsuit, the shoe company chose to settle, which also means it will avoid admitting any wrongdoing.

More than $117,000 of the settlement will be paid to Washington state, with half covering legal fees and the other half going to community health programs.
