PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Portland bus driver Larry Porter was backed up in traffic and hadn’t even started his route when he says he saw a man in a nearby grassy area who was repeatedly punching a woman.

The 48-year-old driver told The Oregonian (http://is.gd/eqrOKn ) that no one else had stopped to help Wednesday afternoon.

TriMet policy says drivers must stay on schedule and call dispatch if they see trouble. Porter saw the woman break free, only to be tackled hard. That’s when the 5-foot-10, 320-pound driver went to help.

He yelled that police were coming, but the attacker began throwing quicker, harder punches. So Porter grabbed the younger man and pinned him to the ground.

He says the pair apparently were arguing over a cell phone. The woman thanked Porter, grabbed the phone and walked off before police arrived.

Police said Thursday they know the incident happened but had few details.

TriMet says Porter likely won’t be reprimanded.
