Letter: Insulting letter was disrespectful

The Columbian
Published: May 17, 2012, 5:00pm

I was disappointed by Don Newell’s May 15 letter, “Response is over the top.” But I can forgive him because I assume Newell is not a professional newspaperman.

Newell indulged himself in a partisan mockery of another man’s “experience of a lifetime.” The letter was disrespectful and insulting toward the senior U.S. Senator for Washington, Patty Murray, D-Wash.

Murray is a distinguished and respected senator who has served the people of Washington since 1992 and was re-elected three times.

I can only wonder about what standards of professional journalism, if any, were used by the editors of The Columbian in their decision to print Newell’s rancorous letter. I expect better judgment from the professional editors of the daily newspaper that serves our widely diverse community.
