Southbound I-5 Bridge to close Saturday night

The southbound span of the Interstate Bridge will close for maintenance overnight Saturday into early Sunday.

The closure will allow Oregon Department of Transportation crews to continue working on rollers that guide the bridge’s huge counterweights up and down during a lift. A problem first emerged two months ago, when workers discovered two rollers had detached from their track. Crews have been working to replace them since.

This weekend, crews will place a 300-pound roller assembly on one of the bridge’s towers, requiring extended lifts throughout the night, according to ODOT.

All southbound lanes of the bridge will close from 11 p.m. Saturday to 7:30 a.m. Sunday. Motorists traveling from Vancouver to Portland during that time should take Interstate 205.

The northbound lanes of I-5, plus the sidewalk on the northbound side, will remain open during the work.
