Letter: Social programs impact millions

The Columbian

In a recent mass mailing, Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Camas, tells us she and the Republican majority in the House of Representatives voted to “restore financial health to Medicare,” thus providing support “for low-income and less-healthy seniors.” Apparently she will have us ignore the dark side of this legislation that would impact those same seniors.

This legislation would trim $300 billion going to social assistance programs, including Meals on Wheels and Medicaid. As many as 2 million people would be unable to use food stamps. And so on.

So the saving of Medicare would be done on the backs of the very people Herrera Beutler professes to care for.
