PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) — The daughter-in-law of Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman was dismissed as a volunteer track coach because she escorted a 17-year-old boy to a prom.

Melissa Bowerman, who is 41, told The East Oregonian newspaper (http://is.gd/pBVR6a) she made an error in judgment, but did not have a romantic relationship with the boy.

She says the teen felt bad he had no date to the Condon High School prom, so she agreed to go with him if he raised his grade in English.

School District superintendent Jan Zarate says the decision to ask Bowerman to “un-volunteer” followed a school investigation.

Gilliam County Sheriff Gary Bettancourt has found no evidence that Bowerman broke a law.

Melissa Bowerman had been helping her 73-year-old husband, Jon Bowerman, coach the team that just won a state title.
