NEW YORK (AP) — Major leaguers have donated $310,000 from their Players Trust to help victims of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami.
The grant announced Wednesday will go to Points of Light and be used by its Japanese affiliate, Hands on Tokyo. The Major League Baseball Players Association said the funds will help expand a mobile Community Cafe.
“The effects of the earthquake and tsunami continue to be felt today,” Arizona pitcher Takashi Saito said. The disasters not only wiped out entire communities, they challenged the spirit of thousands of my neighbors. The Community Cafe will help the proud people living in and around northeastern Japan reconnect with their roots and serve as a place where they can plan for a promising future.”
Major leaguers previously contributed $575,000 to relief and recovery efforts.
