A counselor from Hudson’s Bay High School was named educator of the year by OnPoint Community Credit Union.

Elizabeth Webber-Mikaele won the credit union’s top prize in its Excellence in Education contest. The credit union will pay her mortgage for one year and also give $5,000 to Hudson’s Bay for classroom supplies.

Applicants for the award had to show creativity in the classroom, effective teaching methods and three letters of recommendation, one each from the principal, a fellow teacher and a student. They had to be working in the counties that have OnPoint branches, which is most of northwest Oregon, plus Clark and Skamania counties.

Entries were judged by a committee of community of people involved in education.

Webber-Mikaele was the only finalist from Washington. Kelly West, a special-ed teacher at the 49th Street Academy in Vancouver, was a semifinalist.
