PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Gov. John Kitzhaber will introduce his pick to be Oregon's top school official on Wednesday.
Former New York City schools chancellor Rudy Crew is expected to be at a news conference in Portland. Crew is Kitzhaber's pick to be Oregon's first chief education officer with vast power to oversee education from preschool to college.
Crew ran the New York City public school system from 1995 to 2000, and later ran the Miami school system for four years. He's also worked on a variety of education reform initiatives over a 40-year-career.
The Oregon Education Investment Board is scheduled to vote Thursday on formally hiring Crew.
